Attitude, Effort and Enthusiasm

At the end of October, my kids’ Cross Country and Soccer season concluded, and with exactly 2 days of a break, we began the basketball season!  I coach my son on 3 different teams and have bittersweet feelings about this season, as now that he’s an 8th grader, this will be my last season coaching him as well as several of his classmates who I have coached since kindergarten.

At the first day of practice, one of the first points I made to the team is that they need to focus on what they can control.  They have control over their Attitude, their Effort, and their Enthusiasm.  And that’s about it.  They have no control over their opponents, they can’t help it if the officials make a bad call, and they can’t even do anything about how their teammates play.  But what they can control is their attitude, their effort level, and their enthusiasm.

The same is true in life and health.  Why invest energy in things you can’t control?  Instead, turn your attention to those aspects of life that you have control over, and watch what happens both in life and also in the lives of others.

When it comes to health, you can control what goes in your mouth in terms of nutrition.  You have control over the amount of exercise you provide to your body daily and weekly.  Yes, we are all busy, but there are times when you can part a greater distance from the doors of work or the grocery store and walk inside, and there are times when you can take the stairs.  In fact, you can even do a pushup or two randomly throughout the day!  And you can choose to smile while initiating this activity—bring a bit of enthusiasm to the act of self-improvement.

One final thought:  Whether you’re actively choosing a positive attitude, committing more effort, and living with positive enthusiasm, or not…you’re still making a choice.  The body language and the energy put in to these areas of your daily life and activities and hobbies is a choice.  Choose wisely!
